Ryan Hess Awarded 40 Under 40 Distinction

Ryan Hess, AIA, LEED AP is a visionary architect, entrepreneur, and community advocate whose leadership has shaped both his firm and the architectural landscape of West Virginia. Since joining Mills Group in 2008—then a modest operation of four employees—Ryan has helped propel its expansion to 28 professionals across four statewide offices. A co-owner of the firm and a native of Morgantown, Ryan's deep local ties have proven instrumental in growing the business while preserving its community-centered ethos.
With over 275 projects personally overseen, Ryan’s portfolio reflects his dedication to sustainable, place-based design. His academic foundation includes a B.S. in Civil and Environmental Engineering and an MBA from West Virginia University, as well as a graduate degree from Carnegie Mellon’s School of Architecture. He is a licensed architect and a LEED Accredited Professional, committed to promoting environmentally responsible design—especially in underserved coal and rural communities, a subject he addressed in a featured Autodesk article.
Ryan’s service to the profession includes his role on the Executive Committee of AIA West Virginia and his prior leadership as National Chair of USGBC Students. Under his guidance, Mills Group earned the 2016 Morgantown Chamber Small Business of the Year and multiple AIA design awards.
Beyond the office, Ryan invests in his community through volunteerism and leadership. He teaches youth at the local ice arena, supports Habitat for Humanity, and serves on the Sunnyside Up redevelopment board and his HOA. His firm also donates pro bono services to four projects annually across the state.
Ryan Hess embodies the entrepreneurial spirit, civic dedication, and design excellence that make him an individual transforming his profession and his community from the ground up.
Congratulations, Ryan!
